The Detroit Pistons was known as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, after their location at the time and the name of the team’s owner, Fred Zollner. The name ‘Pistons’ was picked because Zollner’s company manufactured pistons for cars, locomotives and trucks. They were renamed the Fort Wayne Pistons in 1948. The team was relocated to Detroit to make it more profitable. They have since won 3 NBA championships, 7 conference titles and 11 NBA division titles.
The Pistons’ home turf is Detroit, Michigan, also known as Motor City. Many of the city’s landmarks were built in the 1920s and 1930s and help define the city’s unique charm and appeal. Some of its most famous sites are the Penobscot Building, a fine example of Art Deco architecture; the Renaissance Center with its black glass, the Romanesque Revival David Whitney House and the 7,500 feet long Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit to Windsor, Canada. Of course, there is also the Big Tire, a landmark that is a constant reminder of Detroit’s contribution to the automotive industry.
