The Charlotte Bobcats were formed in 2003 as an expansion team after the relocation of the Hornets to New Orleans. After several bids, an ownership group led by Robert Johnson of the Black Entertainment Television won the right to the franchise. His ownership was later bought by former NBA star Michael Jordan, who acquired the team in 2010 after becoming a minority investor in 2006. The team was named after the bobcat, a predatory cat indigenous to North Carolina and surrounding regions. The Bobcats played their first game against the Washington Wizards in the 2004-2005 season.
The Bobcats call Charlotte, North Carolina their home turf. Charlotte is known for many of its architectural landmarks that mark its rich historical past. These include the Latta Plantation, the Rosedale Plantation, the James K. Polk Memorial and the Hezekiah Alexander homesite, the oldest house in the country.
