The Tampa Bay Rays was founded in 1998, although the MLB franchise for the team had been awarded three years prior. In the early days, they were named the Devil Rays and played their first games in the minor league during the 1996 season. They played their first games as the Devil Rays in 1998, pitting their talents against the Detroit Tigers. In late 2007, the team’s name was changed from the Devil Rays to just simply, the Rays. The team won the division title in 2008 – their first.
