The Pittsburgh Pirates has deep, solid roots in baseball. The game was already played in the region as early as 1876, although informally by several teams without any organized affiliations. The team that would later become the Bucs were named the Alleghenys, after the city prior to its annexation by Pittsburgh. The team became a founding member of the American Association. They later renamed themselves the Pirates to play in the 1891 season. The new name came as a result of an AA official’s complaint regarding the signup of 2B Lou Bierbauer. The team has won the World Series championship five times.
The Pirates is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city with a rich past and some of the most memorable landmarks and sites in the country, including the Cathedral of Learning, the Colonial Trust Building, the Trinity Cathedral and the Allegheny Observatory. Pittsburgh is also where the famous Carnegie Mellon University is located.
