The Orioles was named after the eponymous bird, which happens to be Maryland’s official state bird. The team was established in 1901 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as one of 8 American League charter franchises. The Orioles were formerly known as the Milwaukee Brewers. When they relocated to St. Louis, they were called the St. Louis Browns in 1902. They held that name for the next 52 years and later renamed themselves the Orioles in 1954 after moving to Baltimore. They play their home games at Oriole Park.
The Orioles are based in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the most historic cities in the U.S. This is the birthplace of the national anthem. Because of its past as a key strategic location for the 1812 war, Baltimore is home to many of the most memorable monuments in America. Some of its most famous landmarks include Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Washington Monument, Holocaust Memorial, the Star Spangled Banner Flag House and Maryvale Castle. This is also the city where the house of one of its most famous sons – Edgar Allan Poe – still stands.
