The Mariners of the Western Division was granted franchise in 1977. There name is derived from the culture and industry that’s predominant in Seattle. The team was formed after the American League was sued for breach of contract, following the relocation of the Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee. The Mariners succeeded against the Yankees in 1995 and won the division championship – their first. They hold the shared record for winning the most games in one season. They played their home games at the Kingdome but has since moved to Safeco Field since June 1999.
The Mariners’ home base, Seattle, is famous for many things and not just for its natural beauty. With its scenic parks and many beaches, Seattle is a true magnet for tourists. It is also famous for the many tours and festivals held several times a year. Seattle’s most famous landmark is the Space Needle, a building built in time for the World’s Fair in 1962. Pike Place market is also a must-see for local fresh produce, along with the Experience Music Project museum and Pioneer Square.
