The Toronto Blue Jays is an expansion franchise established in 1977 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Currently, they are the only major league team not based in the U.S., since the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. Their first game was played against the Chicago White Sox in April 1977, a game that the Blue Jays won. The team’s name is taken after the name of a bird, the blue jay. An image of this bird appears on the Jays’ logo and uniform. They hold the distinction of being the only non-U.S. MLB team to win the World Series.
The Blue Jays’ hometown is Toronto, Canada’s largest city and capital of Ontario. It is the country’s economic capital, being the main hub for finance, telecommunications, transportation, media, arts, publishing and education, among others. One of Toronto’s most famous landmarks is the CN Tower, once the tallest structure in the world, until the Burj Khalifa in Dubai was built. Casa Loma, the home of financier Henry Pellatt is also a strong tourist magnet. Other attractions in the city include Fort York, Kensington Market, The Beaches and the Toronto Islands.
